A would-be ’70s rock star who faded into obscurity has become an industry darling at age 70, thanks to new documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man.” Retro rocker Rodriguez has gained VIP fans including Pharrell Williams, Zach Galifianakis and Jonah Hill, and insiders are buzzing he could be a further fixture come awards season. While his music remained unknown here, it became hugely popular in South Africa thanks to some bootleg recordings. But Rodriguez, unaware, toiled for decades as a construction worker in Detroit. “[He] sold millions of records in SA — but got not a dime!” tweeted Roseanne Barr after seeing the movie. Some say his comeback could include a trip to the Oscars.
