Comments: 12A young man described as "happy, bright and full of hope" tumbled to his death from his 24th-floor balcony in Midtown -- possibly after the railing gave way, sources said yesterday.
Neither his friends nor investigators seem to believe that Connor Donohue, 24, jumped from the East 39th Street building Sunday morning.
"He was happy, bright and full of hope. He had a great sense of humor and got along with everybody," said Mekaelia Davis, a fellow volunteer at the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network.
Donohue had been a dean of students at Prep for Prep, a nonprofit that helps New York students gain admission to elite high schools nationwide.
A part of the railing also fell, prompting a Department of Buildings spokesman to say, "A post was loose or may have been damaged prior to the incident."

i live in next door building, and watched on Sunday the aftermath of this horrible tragedy of a young man. police arrived, street was blocked off to traffic, that section of building was blocked by tape. over the next several hours i watched in fright - a white sheet over someone, the police, medical examiner arrive, etc. on Monday (what took so long) at least after after 3pm the scaffolding began, but they left by dark, doing minimal work. by 7:30 today Tuesday they were back to resume. An earlier statement here from someone who lives in that building said management has not notified tenants, and that is really shame.
This is a top notch building, and who says otherwise is incorrect. This is an awful accident, may be rest in peace.

(Oops, I means "investigating the safety of the balconies," not elevators.)

Like BigBisou, I also live in the building. This whole incident is extremely sad, and obviously an accident.
I don't really know how I feel about the building management's response. It seems the management company was able to give the press a quote about the accident, but hasn't alerted the residents of what has actually happened; however, in the elevator a few of us were talking and everyone seemed to be aware of what happened - a boy had fallen and died (I didn't hear any mentions of suicide, and I don't think people would ever want to rush to that judgement, but then again I wasn't downstairs when police were called). They probably haven't dealt with an accident of this magnitude before, and while I fault them for poor communication, I feel like lashing out at our landlord or the doormen putting up signs is only finding someone on whom to place the blame. They're just doing what they're told to do by the management company and by the Department of Buildings.
While the building staff should have said something (even just "there was an accident and we are investigating the safety of the elevators"), it's good they didn't jump to conclusions simply to issue a statement.
I don't know how I feel. I just hope that his family and friends are finding support during this difficult time. This is so incredibly sad, and accidents unfortunately happen every day.

I live in the building. Went downstairs when I heard the sirens & was horrified. Almost as bad is bldg staff intimating it was suicide. Also no statement from bldt mgt about the tragedy & absolutely NO communication from building people or mgt - only City Dept form notices hung saying to vacate the balconies & ominous notices in the elevators saying not to go on balconies until further notice w/ no statement to residents, Now there's a huge scaffold being constructed. Again no comm from mgt. allowing the rumor train to run amock. Terrible response & handling. So sorry for his family & friends - rest in peace, Connor.

Even if it was a brand new building I'm not sure I'm leaning against a railing 24 floors up.
