The Jets had just four healthy wide receivers by the end of practice Wednesday. Santonio Holmes was one of those receivers who had a "soft-tissue" injury. Ryan did not specify exactly what it is.
Ryan feels some of the younger receivers have come to camp out of shape and that is causing the problem.
"We've got 12 [receivers] and we were down to four," Ryan said. "Part of that is the tempo but part of it is the responsibility of the guys. You've got to be in shape. We've got to take care of our bodies. That's frustrating."
A Jets spokesman clarified that Ryan was not speaking about Holmes, who sat out the two-minute drill Wednesday.
Ryan spoke earlier in camp about his disappointment in wideout Jeremy Kerley, who has missed all but one practice with a hamstring issue. He also added an extra 10 minute of stretching to practice to try to alleviate the leg injuries.
It is clear, though, that Ryan feels the players came to camp out of shape.
"When you break away and you're away from the team you've got to be in world class shape," Ryan said. "This is the type of tempo we were talking about. So, whatever it is we're certainly looking at it. Do we need to stretch more? Do we need to do whatever? We've identified a concern. We're trying to fix it. "
