A USGA spokesman confirmed in an e-mail that Woods, who tied for fourth place at the Masters on Sunday in his first event back after a five month break, had entered the Pebble Beach field for the June 17-20 tournament.
Woods, a 14-times major champion, obliterated his rivals at Pebble Beach during the 2000 U.S. Open to win by 15 strokes, which is the largest margin of victory ever in a major championship.
After wrapping up his final round at Augusta last weekend, Woods gave no hint about his schedule on the PGA Tour and said he planned to take some time off to re-evaluate things.
Among the other tournaments Woods may play before the U.S. Open are the May 6-9 Players Championship at the PGA Tour’s headquarters in Florida, the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio from June 3-6 and the April 29-May 2 Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Woods took time out from the sport following revelations about his extra-marital affairs.
